HEEDS is a non-profit coalition of scientists dedicated to improving communication, coordination and collaboration in the field of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
An estimated 350,000 synthetic chemicals are in use today, and only a fraction have been tested for long-term effects on our health. Dr. Tracey Woodruff and Dr. Thomas Hartung joined Jennifer Dixon from the Health Foundation podcast to discuss the ‘chemical soup’ that we are exposed to every day.🔬

Our March 2025 Endocrine Disruptor News is now online!
There is so much (bad) news on how the entire field of science is being affected by the new administration; much of it is relevant for EDC science as well.

🚸 Hormone-disrupting chemicals (#EDCs) found in personal care products and plastics harm children's health.
Researchers from INSERM, a partner in the ATHLETE project alongside HEAL, studied exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the health effects on over 370 children in France.
The researchers call for public health policies to reduce exposure to these chemicals, improved labelling requirements, and public awareness campaigns.
A key opportunity to protect people's health, especially children's, is the revision of the EU's chemicals safety legislation REACH, due this year.

Dr. Linda Birnbaum discusses in our latest Science Snippet how children's developing brains are harmed by the effects of plastics and how the toxic chemicals in plastics are impacting our health.

Trump's cuts to federal funding and staffing are on track to cause a recession and that may feel theoretical for some people. But his decisions are also likely to cause many deaths - whether due to lack of necessary resources or the mental toll it can take on a person - and that is tangible, visible, tragic, and PREVENTABLE.
Yes, these extreme budget cuts mean there will not be enough money in programs that provide basic human needs, like food and housing, for example. The mass firings also mean that we won't have enough employees to process the millions of requests for these essential services so wait times will exponential increase for those who do get access to the services they need.
Animals also will suffer. Important conservation and breeding programs that maintain the delicate balance of our ecosystems are already struggling to feed the animals in their care since GSA restricted their government credit cards limits to $1.
Critical infrastructure is also at risk. If a federal employee in rural America who normally drives hundreds of miles to maintain the security and safe operation of power and water stations can't buy fuel for their vehicle...the system that keeps our water drinkable and our heat/cooling/lighting running will eventually stop working.
The map below shows where in America these cuts will have an impact. TL;DR: It's damn-near everywhere. If it hasn't hit your area yet, I promise you it will eventually, if we don't stop it.
Now is the time for collective action. There are many roles in the social change ecosystem, so do what feels right and accessible to you. You could write or call your Congressional representatives (or boo them at a local townhall), protest in the streets, train future leaders how to influence policy, or repost helpful info. But don't ignore what's happening.

End of week Federal Cuts Tracker Map updates.
Here's a progress report:
We have been flooded with offers of help, suggestions to make the forms and map better, and testimonials. Keep it coming! All of it improves the strength of this tool!
Highlights of improvements prompted by this community:
We have adopted a new color palette for visually impaired folks
We have added impacts to U.S. Territories
We are adding more economic data
We have added/expanded new Sectors: Housing, Public Health & Healthcare, Food & Agriculture; Education
When are we going live? I know I said this week, but I'm still getting things in order to make sure this site is durable, transparent, and as accessible as possible. We are working as quickly as possible.
Important: We are working on automation to be able to continue inputing impacts as quickly as possible.
We are in need of a fresh round of newspaper articles to cover the week's news. I have been distracted in website land and fallen down on data collection. If you have 5 minutes to contribute a story or two this weekend about what is happening where you are, here is the link: https://lnkd.in/gCaNig8P

Addressing the toxic chemicals problem in plastics recycling
#PlasticsTreaty
"Plastics recycling is challenged by major issues, leading us to conclude that we cannot rely on recycling to end the plastics pollution crisis as things are done today. One of the major underlying reasons is the presence of toxic chemicals in plastics, either intentionally added or sorbed at various stages of the life cycle of a plastic item. The global Plastics Treaty negotiations should address these challenges with new policy obligations to support a future where recycling is safer and more sustainable."

I'm so proud to have published this piece from EPA staff working on environmental justice about what we stand to lose if the administration succeeds in cancelling those projects. https://lnkd.in/ekKr9GzV
"The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate its scientific research arm, firing as many as 1,155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists, according to documents reviewed by Democrats on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology."
